Tobacco Road is an uncompromising design crafted and molded by an artist’s imagination and the revolutionary eye of the late Mike Strantz. Originally a tract of North Carolina tobacco farmland that was later mined and excavated was where Strantz found his canvas. Stark contrasts of rolling fairways are cast against sandy waste areas native to the area. Panoramic views, stunning vistas, a landscape of uncommon beauty find a home in a golf course that tests “a player’s eye, determination, and wits.” Tobacco Road is a testament to the spirit of adventure that lies at the heart of those who are players of the game.
Mike Strantz, a native of Toledo, Ohio built a career centered on his two passions, art and golf. Strantz cultivated a design style he termed, “functional artwork.” Strantz modeled his design process in the ways of Dr. Alister MacKenzie and other Golden Age architects whose work pioneered the field of golf course architecture while unapologetically incorporating his own artistic flair and spirit of adventure into the design process.
